Andrad This paper presents a method within the family of the discrete element method (DEM) capable of accurately capturing grain shape by using Non-Uniform Rational Basis-Splines (NURBS). The new method, called GEM, bypasses one of the current bottlenecks in computational discrete mechanics of granular materials by allowing discrete elements to take realistic and complex granular shapes encountered in engineering and science (e.g., sand grains). More than a new method, this paper presents a new concept for DEM: using NURBS to seamlessly transition from advanced visualization tools (e.g., X-ray CT) to physics-based computational models where particle shape is realistically modeled. It is expected that, with the rapid advancement of computational power, combining high-fidelity characterization with physics-based computations will lead to more predictive modeling approaches. The granular element method may help transition from characterization to modeling and could lead to more realistic predictions at the grain scale. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Assessing continuum postulates in simulations of granular flow

Continuum mechanics relies on the fundamental notion of a mesoscopic volume ‘‘element’’ in which properties averaged over discrete particles obey deterministic relationships. Recent work on granular materials suggests that a continuum law may be inapplicable, revealing inhomogeneities at the particle level, such as force chains and slow cage breaking. Here, we analyze large-scale three-dimensio...

Experimental Validation of Particle - Based Discrete Element Methods

As a consequence of its particulate nature, soil exhibits a highly complex response to applied loads and deformations. Traditionally, geotechnical engineers have coupled continuum numerical analysis tools (such as the finite element method) with complex constitutive models to analyze soil response. This approach does not explicitly consider the particle-scale interactions underlying the macro-s...

Granular element method (GEM): linking inter-particle forces with macroscopic loading

We present a new method capable of inferring, for the first time, inter-particle contact forces in irregularly-shaped natural granular materials (e.g., sands), using basic Newtonian mechanics and balance of linear momentum at the particle level. The method furnishes a relationship between inter-particle forces and corresponding average particle stresses, which can be inferred, for instance, fro...

Mixed Strong Form Representation Particle Method for Solids and Structures

In this paper, a generalized particle system (GPS) method, a general method to describe multiple strong form representation based particle methods is described. Gradient, divergence, and Laplacian operators used in various strong form based particle method such as moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method, smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and peridynamics, can be described by the GPS metho...
